Time flies, racism persists
October 21, 2007 · Posted in Uncategorized
This is a photo I took in the 1990s, looking down on a wannabe headdress that was floating in Boneyard Creek. Back then it seemed like the University of Illinois mascot, Chief Illiniwek, would never go away. Yesterday, when Illinois played Michigan here, I still saw Chief Tshirts, bumper stickers, and flags everywhere. The Chief has been “retired.” What a long way we have to go.
Boneyard Creek has been channelized and paved over along most of its length. Racism too seems to be running underneath the whole community, buried or ignored by many, all too evident for many others.

Hi Sharon,
Cool to find your blog, and to see this project. I think my own blog is an example of a merging of social justice, research, education… I started my blog “American Indians in Children’s Literature” about a year and a half ago. I tinkered with it, using blogger in what I think are unique ways to make my ‘blog’ a one-of-a-kind resource in many ways.
I get about 1000 hits a week, and easily double that in page views.
I know that my blog is effecting change in the thinking and practice of teachers, librarians, and parents, because they write to me to say so.
Here’s my page:

If you have any thoughts on it, I’d love to hear them. I’m wondering, actually, about the possibilities of working with your project in some way.
Debbie
Thanks for sharing the link to your blog, Debbie. I have bookmarked it. The trouble with blogs for me is that they take time to create thoughtfully and I don’t seem to have enough hours in the day. For example, your post about Hallowe’en is the stuff of great conversation…but I gotta get to work!
